This Brooklyn-born and raised actress made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriett Jackson. She starred in the Off-Broadway revival of Godspell, where she wowed audiences with her stirring rendition of ‘Turn Back, O Man’ which can still be heard on the original cast recording. She returned to Broadway in The Look of Love, and was critically acclaimed for her performances of the hit songs of Hal David and Burt Bacharach, including the title song.

 

Ms. Jenkins then went on to create the role of ‘The Washing Machine’ off- Broadway in Caroline, or Change which later moved uptown to Broadway. This proved to be a wonderful time in her career, providing the opportunity to work with George C. Wolfe, Jeanine Tesori  and Tony Kushner. Most recently she created the role of Frieda May on Broadway in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me where she sang the eleven-o’clock number,  ‘Stop The Show’ and brought the house down every night.

 

Capathia then starred in the  Off-Broadway show, (mis)Understanding Mammy-The Hattie McDaniel Story, a one-woman piece for which she was nominated for a 2007 Drama Desk Award. She has been working with the acclaimed composer Louis Rosen, who has been writing specifically for her. In the fall of 2006, they released a debut CD, South Side Stories, which is available at www.cdbaby.com. Ms. Jenkins and Mr. Rosen are currently signed to PS Classics Records with a new project, One Ounce of Truth : The Nikki Giovanni Songs, released in the spring of 2008. 

 

Capathia has enjoyed much concert success in New York at Joes' Pub, Birdland, The Metropolitan Room, and in Chicago at Steppenwolf. She has recently appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra, National Symphony, Utah Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and the San Diego Symphony.  In October of 2008, Capathia will appear with the Hong Kong Philharmonic.  She has also been seen in the International Music Festival in Harare, Zimbabwe in April 2008.
